We Should Have More of This! Increase Your Water Intake During Summers

Drinking water is really important for its many benefits. All the more essential to keep yourself hydrated during the hot summer. But most of us don’t drink enough water during the day.

Drinking enough water translates into a number of health benefits – it improves skin and hair,  helps to flush out toxins, aids in weight loss, and above all, leaves us energized and hydrated.

Some ways in which we can increase our daily water intake…

Drink Water Before Every Meal

A full glass of water prior to a meal or snack, including your morning tea or coffee gets you into the habit of drinking water regularly, without having to think much about it. It prevents you from overeating in addition to helping the digestion process. Most of us think we are hungry when we are actually thirsty.

If you are no longer hungry after the full glass of water, wait a bit before eating.

You should also try to drink a glass of water before or after every beverage, whether it be lunch or dinner. It helps if we train ourselves to drink 8 ounces of water before eating anything.

Choose a nice cup!

It’s no secret that we all have our own choices when it comes to colors or designs.. to the tiniest of things as well – a cup! We may choose one based on its overall look and color, or the ease of holding onto it – it all depends on what fits our needs. For example, if you drive a lot, you want it to fit perfectly in your cup holder.

On the other hand, if you bike for exercise, having a tight lid , but one that is easy to pop off when drinking while riding, should be a better option. It’s a good idea to try out a few different cups before you choose the best one!

Make Your Own Infused or Flavored Water

It is not uncommon to simply forget to drink water since we may not be interested to drink it, or that it does not have a specific taste. There are several ways in which we can add flavour to water and make it more interesting.. without all the sugar and calories.

One of the simplest ways you can add flavor to water is by using lemon wedges. All you need to do is add a few lemon wedges into your water, squeezing in the juice first, then putting the wedges in it. Lemons have a lot of tart juice, so this will flavor your water quickly and easily. You can also try a mixture of lemon and lime.

Fruit or Vegetable Infused Water

This one is a bit more time-consuming, but has its benefits. While adding fruits or vegetables to water, we not only add the flavour, but also the nutrients. Making infused water requires you to prep your fruits and vegetables so that the juice can be accessed.

Fruits with hard skin should be peeled first. Veggies should also be peeled and chopped. Muddle your herbs to release the oils and flavors.

Once you’ve your vegetables prepped, all you need is to add the ingredients to the bottom of the container, top with ice, and then add water. Refrigerate for a considerable length of time – which really allows those flavors and nutrients to come through.

Limit Other Drinks You Consume

Limiting your consumption of other beverages is another way we can drink more water. This doesn’t mean drinking water all of the time… but it does help to increase your water intake when you’re thirsty – simply because we drink water instead of beverages.

Have Fruits & Veggies with High Water Content

If you find that you simply can’t drink enough water, then ‘eat’ your water instead! Some fruits and veggies have a high water intake – such as cucumbers, grapefruit, apples, pineapple, lettuce, watermelon, radishes, etc. Nevertheless, you should try to drink a good amount of water.

Monitoring Your Water Intake

An app on your phone, a notepad, a planner you keep in your purse, or a program on your computer can help you to monitor your daily water intake.

Start off with tracking your current intake levels. This lets you know how much you are currently drinking on an average. If it is less than 8-10 glasses of water (8 ounces each) a day, start increasing in small amounts. Once you are tracking regularly, it helps you know how and when to drink a little more throughout the day.

Dilute Your Fruit Juice With Water

Another way we can up our water intake is to dilute our glass of juice, that allows us to increase the water content a bit. It is a super easy way to add to your water intake for the day. This is also going to cut back on the calories, carbs, and sugar.
